Supernumerary teeth

Hyperdontia or supernumerary tooth is an additional tooth to the normal number of temporary teeth (20 teeth) or permanent teeth (32 teeth).
It can be found at the level of the central incisors (mesiodens), between the first and second premolars and behind the third molar (paramolar).

Extraction of a supernumerary tooth is indicated:

1. In situations where it hinders the eruption of a permanent tooth
2. When it causes severe dental crowding, displacing adjacent teeth
3. When it prevents orthodontic tooth movement
4. When it allows the accumulation of bacterial plaque, and when it affects aesthetics.
